So, without wasting time let’s dive into it.
Things 3 vs Todoist: The BEST Task-Management App
Intro of Things 3 And Todoist
Availability
The biggest limitation of Things 3 is the fact that it’s only available for the Apple Ecosystem whereas Todoist is available everywhere and they also have a web version on top of that.
Interface
Alright so since that’s out of the sight let me help you choose between the two. Let’s slightly talk about the UI at first. Things 3 has a very clean UI and a totally decluttered workspace.
It solely focuses on what is needed and hence it’s really easy to use. The interface is very thoughtfully designed to keep your tasks easy to manage and help you stay focused. Todoist on the other hand has a very minimal UI as well but I won’t really call it clean when I compare it to Things 3.
But yeah everything is laid out in front as well. Both of the apps have very similar layouts when it comes to organization. You can categorize your tasks based on different projects and also manage time-based tasks from here.
Both of the apps have a calendar view where you can pre-plan your tasks. You can link both of the apps with Google Calendar and it will automatically import your schedule and organize them.
Creating Tasks
Creating tasks in Things 3 is very simple. Hit the + button and add to your task. On top of that, you can add notes and subtasks inside it as well as the date and time. But Todoist has a feature that I absolutely love and always use it.
Todoist supports a simple language, which means you can simply add your tasks like this. For example, you can simply add ‘Go to the gym on Sunday at 4 PM’ and it will automatically create a time-centric task for you. In this way, you can create recurring tasks as well. I can simply add ‘Upload videos every Tuesday and Saturday at 6 PM and it will create that recurring task for me.
If you are on the Pro Version of Todoist then you will be able to send reminders. You can even add location on Todoist, you can’t do that on Things 3. There’s an Anytime tab in Things 3, you can manage your undated tasks over here. Also, you can add various Priority Labels on Todoist.
You can color-code them based on the urgency of the task. So those were pretty much the basics. Creating tasks and adding dates and calendars. And as you can see both the apps do that part pretty nicely so you’re good to go no matter whichever app you decide upon.
Project Management
Now let’s talk about some advanced stuff. If you only care about the basics then you can simply you can click the table of contents and go to the segment where I talk about the pricing, Alright so let’s talk about how you can organize your tasks in different aspects and actually manage your entire life using them. I will also be comparing their desktop apps in this segment.
You can create different areas and folders for different projects. You can also add tags to your tasks in Todoist in order to categorize them better. Organizing and managing your tasks into different areas surely works and it will you stay more organized and productive. Talking about the calendar view, I really like the Board view that Todoist offers.
It is very easy to reschedule your task. You can simply drag and drop it on different dates. This feature makes it really convenient and I use this myself a lot. I personally don’t add many tags and stuff. I just want them all laid out in front of me and would be easy to manage.
Todoist also has a search feature where you can search for a specific task if you are feeling too lazy to locate it manually. Things 3 is designed for a single user experience so you can’t really share your tasks with anyone.
Whereas you can collaborate with others on Todoist, your team members can access different projects and even add comments. So if you need to collaborate with others then Todoist is your obvious choice and also Todoist offers more integrations with other apps, Google Sheets for example.
Pricing
Now let’s address the pricing cause it is all about the money. Things 3 is a paid app and on top of that, you have to buy it separately on each device. Things 3 for iPhone and Apple Watch costs a one-time payment of $9.99. Also, it costs $19.99 for the iPad and $49.99 if you want to use it on a Mac.
If you want to own Things 3 in all your devices then the bundle will cost you a total of $79.99. A little less if you don’t have an iPad. But on the other hand, you can get started using Todoist completely for free across all your devices.
The free version of Todoist allows you to pretty much do everything. You can only create 5 projects in Todoist if you are on the free plan. If you get the pro version then you get access to location-based tasks, up to 300 projects and it will allow you to add reminders. Todoist Pro Plan costs $5 per month or $48 per year.
It kind of comes down to what your preferred way of payment is. If you prefer one-time payments then Things 3 is your man, you have to buy it separately for every device as I previously mentioned. If you’re okay with paying subscriptions then Todoist can be your man.
But to be honest you don’t even need the Pro version if you can manage with the free version. I am using the free version of Todoist to this day.
Conclusion
So in conclusion, which app is better? I feel for proper project management Things 3 is a better choice. And it also has a better and cleaner UI in comparison. You will really enjoy using it if you are in the Apple Ecosystem. It’s simple and powerful but also has a price tag that you would have to consider.
If you keep switching between different devices then Todoist is a better choice as it’s available everywhere and it’s free and it also has More options for power users. If you need to collaborate with others then you know the answer by now as Things 3 is catered towards a more personal experience. Which app would you prefer to use? Things 3 or Todoist?
